As we celebrate #UNC24, hear from #UNCgrad Aiko Rachel Peterson on a few of her favorite moments at #UNC.

🎓 Aiko is from Surabaya, Indonesia. She graduated in December with her bachelor’s in advertising and public relations from unchussman and data science and a minor in biology. 

🐏 A highlight of her Carolina experience was her time as Assistant Audience Engagement Editor at dailytarheel. “This role wasn’t just a job—it was where I truly saw how my work could create meaningful change in the community. While seeing our efforts recognized by the White House was incredible, what mattered even more was knowing we sparked conversations. This was my first “big girl job” in the U.S., a stepping stone to financial independence and a place where I found my voice. It showed me the power of storytelling and reminded me that I could make a difference.”

💬 Aiko’s advice to Tar Heels is to embrace every opportunity. “Don’t be afraid to take on something that feels out of your comfort zone. Surround yourself with people who lift you up and push you to grow, and don’t hesitate to lean on them when things get tough. Remember that your voice matters. Use it to make a difference, however big or small, and leave your own unique mark on this community.” 

🩵 After graduating, Aiko will miss Carolina’s “work hard, play hard” culture. “There’s something incredible about the way we push ourselves to always do more. I love the energy of the cheering crowds at every basketball game and the pure joy of rushing Franklin after winning against Duke!”

👣 When asked how she imagines her Heelprint at Carolina, she said, “I knew from the start that, as the only Indonesian undergraduate student at #UNC, I had a chance to leave a lasting impression on people. I wanted that mark to be one of warmth and kindness. That’s part of why I joined cuab_unc—to help create moments where people could take a break from the rigorous environment at Carolina and simply enjoy themselves. More than anything, I hope that through my work and in every interaction, I was able to bring a little light into someone’s day and make them smile when they needed it the most.”
