17 years ago, we got to visit Becca and Doug’s home—and the Canadian cove in which it floats. In celebration of our 25th anniversary this year, we’re taking a look back at some of our favorite stories from the archive, like this one.

“This place is my heaven,” Becca Worple, who has spent summer vacation in Ontario’s Georgian Bay every year of her life, told us. “Every day is unpredictable and magical.” Summers are warm and clear, but the winds, she pointed out, can change at any time. Change came for Becca and her partner, Doug, several years ago, when they grabbed onto the rare opportunity to acquire a three-acre chunk of rock with two aging cottages and a two-story boathouse. The necessary renovations were certainly daunting, but good fortune connected Becca with the architects who would provide the solutions. “It was a sort of wrong number,” explained architect Michael Meredith of mmmosarchitects. “She was calling for a Martin Miller or something, with a name similar to mine.” But once Meredith and his partner, Hilary Sample, heard about the project, they were intrigued and quickly accepted the challenges of the job. For the renovation, the couple proposed a series of buildings that would form a “necklace” around the island—and the crowning jewel would be the decrepit boathouse. Thanks to the structure’s old footprint, if you can call it that, the couple had permission to build within the island’s cove, making use of massive pontoons. And while the Worples’ cottage was unusual for the area at the time, Becca eventually stopped seeing it as radical at all. “In the end I like how understated it is,” she said. “Everything up here is about blending in with the environment, and that’s exactly what this place does.” #dwellarchives | November, 2008 | Photos by raimund.koch | Story by alexbozikovic | #moderndesign #modernarchitecture #interiordesign #interiorarchitecture #modernhouse #moderncabin #boathouse #floatinghouse #floatingcabin #cabinideas #cabininspiration #hometour #homeinspiration #homeideas #home
