This garage was nothing special. Complete with exposed joists, pipes, and wires—not to mention the sloping concrete floors and lack of natural light—there was a lot of work to do to make it a comfortable space. But thankfully, when they purchased the home back in 2018, Jessica and Stig Olson saw its potential. In 2020, they reached out to a friend, interior designer @hana_mattingly of @innenstudio, for help. Mattingly brought in another friend, architect @jackhotho, and when the design meetings started, they felt more like dinner parties than work sessions. “Jess is an amazing cook. She would make this fresh bread, and Stig always had a signature cocktail waiting for us upon arrival,” says Mattingly. “It was definitely not your typical project in that regard.” Once they had a plan, the team got to work, opening the garage up to the backyard through bifold glass doors and a new exterior concrete slab. They also employed a large lounge that can seat 12, and painted the walls and ceiling white. In order to allow the light to permeate the entire space, the designers used open shelving to define small vignettes. Acoustic insulation in the ceiling functioned to dampen upstairs sound, while also hiding plumbing and wires. Now complete with a beautiful mix of thoughtful technology and Jessica’s collection of antique homewares, the couple has the perfect place just a short staircase away.
