Back in 2008, we got the chance to visit architects Linda Taalman and Alan Koch out at their house in Joshua Tree. We figure it’s time we resurface the story from our archive.

The duo hatched the idea for the iT House in the early 2000s, hoping to design a house from prefabricated structural components and glass walls on which artists could later apply graphics. In 2006, they launched into construction, which was a sort of 20st-century barn raising during which they and their friends came out on weekends to work together. The basic thinking, Taalman explained, was to “take advantage of industries outside of the traditional building environment. The iT House is a collection of off-the-shelf manufacturing systems that we’ve combined.” But to be clear, the goal was not to create a prefab product as an end in itself. “We’re not looking to crack the nut of making a cheap, affordable, mass-produced home product,” Taalman continued. “We’re looking to make buildings that have merit and that enable us to take control over the process.” You’d be right to raise an eyebrow at the minimally insulated home sitting in a desert, but exposure is what Linda and Alan enjoyed about it. “It can be really windy sometimes and I wonder if it’s going to blow away,” Taalman said. “But I’m leery of spaces that are over controlled. I like to know if it’s day or night—and when it’s hot, it’s totally different than when it’s cold. And when it snows it’s magical.
