When you’re staying at a cabin in the woods, how much does the design of that cabin matter? You’re there for the trees, the birds, the glory of nature—not the architecture. At least, that was what one of our editors, jackbaldmo, thought as he drove through the narrow cobblestone streets of Mineral del Chico, a small mountain town just over two hours from Mexico City, to test out a new offering from cabins.wander, a company that rents design-forward short-term stays in various locations. The setting would put on the show, he figured, and the structure, though handsome, would be a supporting player. But this cabin was different—and it was meant to be. “Everyone has a tiny cabin,” says Santiago Garcia Rey, Wander Cabins’ founder. “All of them are either A-frames or square cabins.” He enlisted Pablo Germenos Garcia and Ernesto Pérez Rea Juncá of oioioi_mx to design the unconventional little building. The O-Frames, as the designers call this new line of cabins in a playful nod to their curves, avoid the clichés of other contemporary cabins. The structures also take a more responsible approach to communing with nature. They’re mostly prefab, built by peregrino_company just outside Mexico City. Minimal work was done on-site, and there are no poured-in-place concrete foundations. Hypothetically, the cabins could be removed and leave less damage to the site than conventional buildings. But even with a thoughtful design intent, the question of architectural significance in natural beauty remains. For Jack, seeing moonlight pour through a semicircular skylight in the bathroom put things into perspective. Nature may be the star, but good design, he realized, can shape the way we experience the outdoors—and, in the process, elevate the humble experience of ending the day into something beautiful.
