When Black transgender and nonbinary (TGNB+) young people receive high levels of support from parents or caregivers, they reported experiencing 47% lower odds of attempting suicide in the past year compared to those who received little to no support. 

These numbers underscore a larger message: acceptance and encouragement from parents/caregivers can have a profound impact on the livelihood of Black TGNB+ young people. Building accepting and welcoming environments fosters a powerful sense of belonging, purpose and even the perceived life expectancy for Black TGNB+ young people. 

When we uplift intersections of race and gender, we give folks the space to imagine a future. You can help improve the mental health and well-being of LGBTQ+ young people by supporting the Black transgender and nonbinary young people in your life, uplifting Black  stories, and taking the time to learn with love.
