After 134 years in business, 5th Avenue Floral Co. has sold its last bouquet 💐

Three generations of the same family have run the shop, which opened in 1901 on West 5th Avenue. By 1908, they were said to be one of the largest flower growers under glass in the country.

In 1945, they moved into this location on Kenny and Kinnear roads. Adorned with an iconic red neon sign, the building was custom built on land that once held some of the family’s greenhouses.

Over the years, the shop supplied flowers for thousands of weddings, funerals, and (always stressful) Valentine’s Days. Notable regulars included Jack Nicklaus and Muhammad Ali, who had flowers delivered when the cross-country service existed in the 1970s.

Owner Kim Fitz grew up in the shop, riding the dumbwaiter and sleeping on work tables. Eventually, she took over the business, selling thousands of roses, carnations, snapdragons, irises, tulips, and more.

Last week, she sold the final flowers – eight daisies and alstroemeria – and officially joined her husband in retirement, eager to spend time with their 10 grandchildren.

A real Columbus landmark ❤️ 5thavefloral
