Did you know there are many different types of psoriasis? I’m a board-certified dermatologist, and here’s a quick guide to some of the most common ones:⁠
⁠
🩹 Plaque Psoriasis⁠
The most common type, affecting 80-90% of people with psoriasis. It appears as red, inflamed patches covered in silvery-white scales, often found on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back.⁠
⁠
🎯 Guttate Psoriasis⁠
This type shows up as small, dot-like lesions and is often triggered by strep infections. It’s more common in children and young adults and typically appears on the torso, arms, and legs.⁠

📍 Inverse Psoriasis⁠
Found in skin folds (under breasts, around the groin, and buttocks), this type causes smooth, red lesions without scales. It worsens with friction and sweating.⁠
⁠
⚪ Pustular Psoriasis⁠
Characterized by white pustules (noninfectious pus) surrounded by red skin. It often affects the hands and feet and can be triggered by stress, infections, or medications.⁠
⁠
🔥 Erythrodermic Psoriasis⁠
A rare but severe form that causes widespread redness and shedding of the skin, along with intense itching and pain. This type requires immediate medical attention.⁠

💅 Nail Psoriasis⁠
Affects fingernails and toenails, causing pitting, discoloration, and crumbling. It can also lead to the nails separating from the nail bed.⁠

🦴 Psoriatic Arthritis⁠
This is an inflammatory form of arthritis associated with psoriasis. It causes joint pain, stiffness, and swelling, often in the fingers and toes, and can lead to permanent joint damage if untreated.⁠
