Helping to bring one baby into the world is special — but supporting the birth of four is something Rebecca will never forget! 👶👶👶👶⁣
⁣
‘The quad birth (in 2022) was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I felt so honoured to be allocated as the primary midwife,’ she said.⁣
⁣
The babies' mum was transferred to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH) from Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) in the middle of the night after going into threatened premature labour. ⁣
⁣
The team had been preparing for weeks, making sure everything was in place for this rare and complex birth. When it came time for their arrival, the birthing suite and neonatal intensive care (NICU) teams were buzzing, despite the early hour.⁣
⁣
‘We had four resuscitaires (medical stations for neonatal resuscitation) with three team members at each — a paediatrician, a NICU nurse and a midwife. Each of us had a label on our scrubs so we knew which baby we were caring for.'⁣
⁣
In total, 21 staff were dedicated just to the babies. Thanks to careful planning and seamless teamwork, four tiny baby girls arrived safely via caesarean section, each weighing between 990 and 1100 grams. Once stabilised, they were carefully moved to the NICU.⁣

‘No two births are ever the same. It’s always special to help bring new life into the world. It’s beautiful to witness the very start of a life cycle.’⁣
