Two weeks ago, I ran the Leadville 100 because I’m a romantic and I’m in the most beautiful moment of life I’ve ever seized. Running 100 miles felt like the opportunity to write a sentence within the love story that is life itself. This is a sentence that I’ll remember and treasure forever, unique to itself, woven into the stories and chapters that this race, course, process, and journey has largely already written. But it’s also a sentence that will tie the threads together with what’s to come—in the future, both in and out of running, and in so much more than I could have ever comprehended as that little kid who dreamed of the Race Across The Sky or the young man who wagered it all the first time he ran.

This was my fourth straight Leadville 100. This time, I ran it not for creating a film project, or months and years of buildup, or a mission of creating a movement to transform the culture of mental health in my community. (Although, I hope and know it will end up being part of that one anyhow).

I ran because I’m alive. And because I’m really, truly living.

Many thanks to everyone who was a part of writing this sentence—crew, pacers, racers, volunteers, friends, family, strangers, homies, animals.

🎶: Every race, one song gets stuck in my head more than any other. This was fittingly that song this go-around.

Sidenote: I don’t carry my phone with me when I’m out there. I just go all-in and fully check out to do so. It’s funny what a reset that is to the dopamine centers of my brain. Since finishing, I’ve been processing and celebrating the race by writing in my journal rather than here and by keeping on living. Despite all that, down the line I’ll look back and also be grateful for these reflections. So I’ll share some more moments, musings, (and probably more memes) from the race this week.
