Win for whales 🎉: Starting January 2026, the U.S. will ban seafood imports from 42 nations to protect marine mammals.

The National Marine Fisheries Service found these nations failed to adopt bycatch prevention measures that are comparable to what U.S. fishers must follow under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. 

These sanctions are already aligned with what has been required under the Act since 1972, but the Fisheries Service ignored the directive for decades — until the Center and our allies sued. 

These conservation sanctions will mean fewer beloved marine mammals will get caught and killed in fishing gear. 🐳
