jacki_gordon finished as a finalist in this year’s World Food Photography Awards sponsored by Tenderstem® Bimi® Broccolini (foodphotoaward) in the MPB Award for Innovation category. Her captivating shots blend food photography with intricate prop design, giving viewers a delightful sensory experience. We were thankful to chat with Jacki to get a unique insight into the creation of her art.

MPB: How did you build your style and do you think you have more to learn?

Jacki: “COVID meant that I couldn't get out and do my wildlife photography so I bought myself a Canon EF-S 35mm macro lens and started to take photos of stuff from around the house. I quickly moved to trying miniature photography and that quickly became a passion. I usually have a rough idea of the scene that I want to create before I start so I tend to know which props I am going to use and which figures. Setting up the scene so that the image 'tells a story' takes some time, particularly as the tiny figures can be so unco-operative - they lean at an angle, fall over, stick to my fingers and I have broken quite a few as they can be rather fragile. Trying out different lighting set-ups is a constant theme; it's great fun.”

MPB: What does your ideal setup for shooting look like?

Jacki: “It includes a coffee by my side and props that I want to eat afterwards. When this isn't the case I can always rely on my partner Paul to help! Everything is set up on my kitchen table and I tend to use a cheap and cheerful lightbox and sometimes additional LED lights. I always shoot in manual mode and auto ISO. Although I started with a Canon 200D, virtually all my miniature photos have been shot with my Canon 90D (also a cropped sensor) and the Canon EF-S 35mm macro lens. And I use a tripod, often just a small table top one. I work with OO/HO scale figures: an adult male is less than 2cm, a child considerably smaller. I have even used scale model chickens!”
