The original 1923 version of "Portrait of My Sister" (second image) represented Dalí's sister, Anna Maria, in a relatively positive light. When this work was first exhibited in Spain, it brought the 19-year-old artist considerable fame, even drawing comparisons to Picasso.

Nearly four years later, Dalí returned to his canvas and completely transformed it by adding a second upside-down figure, making it a double portrait.

Whether a reflection of Picasso's profound influence on Dalí or a symbol of developing tension between the artist and his sister, no documentation details exactly why he drastically altered the work.
