We've decided to join the metmuseum's #curatortag and our curator Dirk is it! "Having been a long-time admirer of the works by Rene Magritte (initiated, no doubt, by the Magritte-esque cover of Styx’s The Grand Illusion album), it was many years before I had the opportunity to see his works in museums. I first saw this painting at the Art Institute of Chicago for the Magritte retrospective in 1992, and it literally took my breath away. It was a great pleasure for me to coordinate the delivery and installation of this same work (and 77 others!) for the Midnight in Paris: 1929 exhibit at The Dali in 2019.
To me Magritte is master of the double-take, and this painting is no exception – his images make you question reality and ‘the norm’, and are most often are the result of a dialogue between him and fellow surrealists. The ‘reveal’ in this work is also fantastic – almost like a film montage it shows the reverse of the action (foot goes INSIDE shoe), and also shows the fragile contents of the shoes themselves." #DaliFromADistance #MusuemFromHome #TheDali #MidnightInParis #Curator
