Did you know Puerto Rico is home to one of the longest holiday seasons in the world? 🎁

On the Island, la Navidad spans 45 days, starting right after Thanksgiving and extending until mid-January, culminating with the San Sebastián Street Festival, commonly known as SanSe. Each year, Puerto Ricans celebrate the season with unique traditions and customs, from food to music and even décor.

One of the most vibrant and joyous traditions is the parranda. A parranda is a festive gathering where friends and family come together to sing local Christmas songs, accompanied by instruments such as the panderos, güiros, maracas, the Puerto Rican cuatro, and the tiple.

The origins of parrandas in Puerto Rico date back to Spanish colonial times, blending Catholic, African, and Taíno traditions. These joyful nighttime traditions involve groups gathering quietly at a home, and then bursting into song. Homeowners typically offer refreshments, like the famous asopao (a hearty rice soup), and often join the group to continue the festivities, with the final stop lasting until sunrise.

Nowadays, parrandas have been incorporated at any time into public spaces, such as businesses, malls, and town squares, showcasing the rich cultural tradition to larger audiences. This adaptation highlights the dynamic way Puerto Ricans celebrate while staying connected to their roots."
