## Caption

Since the beginning of June, Malaysia has been under total lockdown because of rising COVID-19 cases—with only essential and emergency services allowed to operate. Many have been driven to hunger and homelessness, as a result of losing their livelihoods and ability to provide food and other essentials for themselves and their families. Even worse, financial distress and prolonged isolation has been causing a rise in the number of suicide cases in Malaysia. 

Malaysians have started a "white flag movement" #benderaputih, encouraging neighbors who need food, essentials, or assistance, to raise a white flag to let others know their household needs help. This past year has been a powerful reminder that generosity *must* be at the heart of the society we rebuild together, unlocking dignity, opportunity and equity around the globe.
