“In the beginning, we really didn’t know what we wanted to be. We met really frequently in person and I really credit that to a lot of what created the foundation that our team has now. We really built a lot of friendships and connections to each other in that way. 

But the main thing to our work was figuring out what actually was needed in our area. …One of the things that really changed for us was talking with an interfaith group in the area that had a small fund for people seeking an abortion. And something they said to us was, we have this little budget that we can help people with. And what we DON’T have is any ride. Or any way of getting people to appointments. Or places for them to stay. There were a lot of requests for that. And so we said, oh we can do that! Which has been how we respond to a lot of things over the years.”

Gina Martínez, Director of the coloradodoulaproject breaks down how CDP got started in last month’s Abortion Academy. They didn’t have a huge budget, and there were only a few folks involved in the beginning. They had people with commitment, interest, and passion for the cause, and they built something amazing. 

CDP is an amazing example of people seeing a need, and filling that need. Now is the time for us all to be abortion activists, in whatever way we can. What is needed in YOUR community?
