Interstate 55 runs from Southern Louisiana to Chicago. I-55 has become a route for tens of thousands of abortion seekers leaving restricted states in order to access care in Illinois, which is now the southernmost point of legal access for much of the South. This highway is covered with shaming, gruesome anti-choice billboards—because logistical and financial struggle is tough, but the project wouldn’t be complete without some psychological torture in the mix.  We hate this so we put up six billboards with explicitly pro-abortion messages along the highway, as well as a bunch of digital ads in convenience stores, intended to be a beacon of support and affirmation for people making the journey. Featured in her custom abortion couture is beloved Memphian, SYA VIP & electric Aquarian, the one and only QUEEN! Queen had an abortion many years ago in Tennessee and she told me she couldn't dream of what it would have meant to her to see a message like this one back then. Queen is a hub of her community: everybody who comes through her hair salon knows they can talk about their lives in a real way. She’ll help people get Plan B, she’ll talk to young people about sex and birth control, the SYA book is on the counter and abortion is HIGHLY DISCUSSED. Queen knows how to find abortion pills, even in a state like Tennessee where abortion is banned, and she will readily share that information as well (@plancpills!). This is how we do it: learn how to help yourself and the people around you, and make yourself available for the conversation. Collectively, we can’t be stopped.
