💚 Text via SYA’s ameliamaris: Yesterday, Justyna Wydrzynska became the first person to be found guilty of “aiding an abortion” under Poland’s ultra-strict abortion laws. Justyna was sentenced to 8 months of “restriction of freedom” by performing 30 unpaid hrs a month of community service. To very loosely translate/paraphrase part of Justyna’s beautiful courtroom speech: yes, I did it. But I believe that helping another human when they are in desperation and fighting for freedom is a necessity, it is an element of humanity that I will not renounce, I will not be ashamed or consider it a crime. I would do it again—as a matter of fact I’ll do it again LATER TODAY. Then Justyna left the courthouse and was basically like “community service? I’ll show you community service,” and started taking phone calls on the aborcjabezgranic_ hotline, helping people get abortions. The sentence came down as I was frantically getting ready to head to Warsaw (via Derry!) for the date we *thought* would be the sentencing, and I was a bit frazzled trying to understand & respond. I still don’t have a total grasp of the implications. But the whole day, I was dissolving into fits of crying laughter because of how fucking gangster Justyna’s response was and how beautiful and proud my friends are and how stupid these men are for ever thinking they could stop us. The #jakjustyna campaign is a masterclass—aborcyjnydream took the criminal prosecution of their den mother and leveraged it into a global PSA that abortion belongs to the people, always has & always will. Collective defiance is the only way forward; the number of people who survive this moment is directly proportional to the number of us who step up and start participating in one another’s care. 💚 You’ll notice a whole lot of SYA in these pics, some is years old but some is piping hot: we worked with builtbycivilization on a set of graphics with the tagline “behind each one of us is ten more,” a line from the plancpills doc which embedded in my mind after seeing the film. builtbycivilization has been w SYA since the jump, reliably brilliant & generous & a joy to work with and I think this is our sharpest collab to date. 💚
