🌹 In 1977, Rosie was a student and mom living in the Rio Grande Valley. She was 27 years old. She loved classic rock and was a semester away from finishing college when she made the decision to have an abortion. Rosie could not afford to pay for a procedure at a clinic, and died after an unsafe abortion.⁠
⁠
🌹 Rosie should have been able to use her Medicaid health insurance to pay for her abortion, but she was not able to because politicians passed the #HydeAmendment to ban public insurance from covering abortion care the year before her death. We are still fighting to remove the Hyde Amendment from the federal budget to this day. ⁠

🌹 The Hyde Amendment and all restrictions on abortion access at any level of government are not only harmful and burdensome for low-income women of color—they are deadly. This is what we're thinking about as we look back on one month of Texans living under the most extreme abortion ban in the country. #SB8 The toll it has already taken on Texans’ lives is incalculable. ⁠

🌹 Rosie has always been an important figure for Lilith Fund’s work and within the larger reproductive health, rights, and justice movement. We honor her and her family by fighting against bans on health insurance coverage of abortion and other abortion restrictions, working proactively to pass #RosiesLaw in Texas, and by doing everything we can to keep our hotlines open for Texans who need help paying for their abortion care—especially now. ⁠

🌹 Today we remember Rosie and why we must fight for abortion access—because access to safe abortions saves lives. ⁠
