“Remember when Rush Limbaugh died and people raised a million dollars for Planned Parenthood? That was amazing. But it would have been even better if they had raised that money for independent clinics. You might be having a negative reaction to me saying that, and that’s totally understandable. We all feel protective of Planned Parenthood, in part because we watch people like him turn them into a target, and also because they provide a ton of people health care. But here’s the thing: Three in five abortions happen at independent clinics. Huge portions of the country rely entirely on Indies. And that becomes increasingly true the further you get into pregnancy. So abortion after the first trimester is essentially impossible to access without indie clinics. And because these are small, separate clinics without fundraising or communications or name recognition, they receive a fraction of the support. But they need it the most. So the next time that you feel galvanized to give money or raise money for abortion clinics, remember: Indies need it most.”
