“When I think of RJ, I think of that Spongebob meme where he’s like ‘EVERYTHING!’ And like the rainbow pops up. Because that’s - it’s definitely how I feel about Reproductive Justice as a political framework. It really allows us to see the full complexities of our lives and the way that oppression disrupts our ability to be able to fully thrive and live the lives that we want to live. And so it’s like when you think of Reproductive Justice, you have to think about economic justice. Because an issue like abortion access - so many people are not able to access the abortion care that they need and want because they do not financially make enough money to cover their needs of their health care. And so, for us, the majority of folks who call our helpline are either unemployed or underemployed, so working part-time or less hours. And that’s an issue. I mean, granted, f*ck capitalism just to be frank, right? But in this system of capitalism that we’re all being forced to live within, if we’re not making enough money to cover our basic needs - because abortion access is healthcare, and healthcare is a basic need - then….what’s happening, right?! If we’re in the country of like, ‘the land of the free,’ which also f*ck that language, right - but if we truly are that, how are we actually making sure that people are free and have what they need to live full lives? And Reproductive Justice looks at that in a myriad of ways.”
