How badly do you want to jump into the water at the swimming pools in Leça da Palmeira, Portugal?

Built in 1966, the pools were designed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira and combine the natural rocky seaside with elegant minimal concrete design. Siza sought to keep as much of the original rocky shore as possible to make it feel like you are swimming in the ocean.

Over the years, the ocean air, salty seawater, and oil refinery-adjacent location have deteriorated the concrete and steel supports, which now need repair.

In 2020, Getty took the plunge by awarding a grant for research into the structure’s condition and for a conservation plan for the pools. This plan assesses climate change threats to the architecture.

This site and many more have received Getty funding through "Keeping It Modern" which supports the preservation of endangered modern architecture around the world.

Today is the International Day for Monuments and Sites—a day to uplift the importance of safeguarding heritage under threats of disasters and conflicts. #IDMS2025
