Meet Hathor.

The goddess Hathor, a sky deity associated with love and fertility, is among the divinities who frequently appear in Nubian jewelry. Her iconic crown is composed of a sun disk framed by cow’s horns. A temple to Hathor stood at the sacred mountain of Gebel Barkal, near the Nubian city of Napata, where she was worshipped as a consort of the supreme god Amun.

Here, you can see her on three different jewelry items.

First, a bracelet with a variety of colorful enameling techniques and gold appliques, found in a royal woman’s tomb near Gebel Barkal.

In Egypt, Hathor was often shown nursing the king, symbolically giving him life and strength. A silver amulet from the tomb of the Nubian queen Nefrukekashta shows her being nursed by Hathor, emphasizing the high status that Nubian royal women held.

Finally, a gold circular ear stud depicting Hathor was found in a burial at Meroë.

All are on view now at the Getty Villa Museum’s “Nubia: Jewels of Ancient Sudan.”
