Do you know the Church of Santiago Apóstol in Peru?

Constructed in 1681, the church is made of thick mud brick (adobe) walls and features beautiful wall paintings from the same period depicting saints and other Christian motifs.

The church is located in the Comunidad Campesina Kuñotambo, a remote village of 500 people southeast of the city of Cusco, Peru.

Unfortunately, earthquakes are common in this region of the Andes. Several seismic events have heavily damaged the church’s roof, earthen walls, and foundation, causing the building to be shuttered.

For a decade, Getty collaborated with local partners to work on the church as a case study for buildings made of earth in earthquake-prone areas. 

The group implemented innovative seismic retrofitting approaches using traditional construction techniques designed as part of Getty's Seismic Retrofitting Project.

Now the church once again safely serves the people of Kuñotambo. This work helps preserve Latin America's cultural heritage and inform other regions of the world that have both earthen architecture and earthquakes.
