Peter Hujar is mainly known for his portraits of artists, musicians, and gender-fluid performers who were part of the creative scene in and around New York City’s Greenwich Village during the 1970s and 1980s.

The second image is a portrait of Ethyl Eichelberger. The photograph captures the bare face of the playwright and drag performer, whom Hujar often photographed.

Hujar became interested in photography while enrolled in the School of Industrial Art (now the High School of Art and Design) in New York City and later mastered the technical aspects of darkroom printing while working as an assistant for a handful of commercial studios.

In 1967 Hujar quit his job to establish his studio in New York City, and in 1974 he had his first solo exhibition at the Floating Foundation of Photography. Hujar was very selective about who he worked with, and how his photographs were displayed.

He later published his first and only monograph "Portraits of Life and Death" in 1975. Writer and critic Susan Sontag wrote the introduction to his book: "Peter Hujar knows that portraits in life are always, also, portraits in death... I am moved by the purity and delicacy of his intentions."

During his lifetime, Hujar did not receive critical acclaim, and in 1987 at the age of 53, he died from medical complications due to AIDS. Today, Peter Hujar’s portraits and nudes are celebrated for their genuine intimacy and intensity, and for the beauty of his prints.
