## Caption

Everyone changes their mind—even artists! That’s the point of a preliminary drawing. Easier to figure it out on paper than repaint it, and sometimes we get a peek into the artist’s process. 

A pentimento is the visible presence of a previous draft or earlier version. Giulio Romano’s drawing “An Allegory of the Virtues of Federico II Gonzaga” is just one example from our collections that shows this beautifully.

Make your way to the two figures at the top right of the page. You’ll notice two instances where the artist altered the direction of the subject's arm. The upper figure’s arm was once extended and is now raised, while the lower figure’s arm was once raised and is now lowered. 

Romano “erased” the earlier version with white gouache. Over 500 years the gouache faded, revealing the artist’s initial markings. 

Next time you visit a museum, look closely and you might discover a “pentimento”!
