## Caption

These delicious 19th-century illustrations are part of an album created by an officer of the French army from documentation he gathered while on a tour of duty in Mexico.

The album's main focus is on Indigenous Mexican cultures and people rather than on military exploits that occurred during his tour of duty during the French intervention (1864-66). Although some military exploits from the French intervention in Mexico are recorded in the album, interestingly enough, all occurred before or after the author's tour of duty in Mexico.

The album is illustrated throughout with drawings by the officer, as well as with photographs and graphics by others.
