masp takes over gettymuseum!

The first modern museum in Brazil, masp was founded in 1947 by businessman Assis Chateaubriand. He invited the Italian critic and art dealer Pietro Maria Bardi to be MASP’s first artistic director, and the visionary Italian-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi to develop the museum’s architecture and exhibition displays. 

In 1968 the museum was transferred to its current location on Paulista Avenue in São Paolo.The iconic building designed by Bo Bardi has become a landmark in the history of 20th-century architecture. MASP’s collection holds more than 11,000 works, including paintings, sculptures, objects, photographs, videos, and textiles of different periods from Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. In Bo Bardi’s radical exhibition display, glass easels are used for the collection and invite the viewer to break the linear narrative of art history and create their own path through the artworks in the gallery.
