## Caption

The Achaemenid Persian Empire (550–330 BC) ruled over 23 subject nations, where many different languages were spoken. This stone tablet is one of a series, each bearing a royal inscription of King Xerxes I in one of three languages: Old Persian, Elamite, and Babylonian. It was found at the Achaemenid ceremonial capital of Persepolis. 

The Achaemenid kings were the first in the Near East to issue their announcements in more than one language, reflecting the multiethnic character of the empire. 

This example is written in Babylonian and recounts how Xerxes suppressed a series of rebellions. He then “tore down the house of those evil gods” and restored the proper worship of the Achaemenid patron deity Ahura Mazda.
