Do you notice the textures?

Paul Cézanne painted this portrait of his friend Anthony Valabrègue with a combination of loaded brushes and a palette knife, a spatula-like tool. 
 
Cézanne applied his paint thickly, in successive layers, building up from darker to lighter tones. 
 
Though roughly applied, each broad stroke has been laid down with evident deliberation. 

Cézanne modeled Valabrègue's features with short, faceted strokes that create a strong sense of volume, as if the artist were sculpting in paint.
