For March's #ConnectingCollections, we're going behind the scenes to reveal little-known challenges of museum facilities.

Completed in 1974, the Getty Villa was modeled after the Roman Villa dei Papiri, which was buried in the eruption of Vesuvius. The Getty Villa uses technologies unknown to the ancient Romans—like elevators and HVAC systems—but both villas are part of a seaside landscape, with rooms and corridors open to breezes from the ocean. Both also have gardens with works of art: at the Getty Villa, garden walls are painted with frescoes, and the gardens are dotted with modern replicas of ancient bronzes excavated at the ancient Villa dei Papiri.

The placement of the replicas, which include a drunken satyr, runners, dancers, busts, deer, and divinities, was based on excavation maps. Commissioned from the Chiurazzi foundry in Naples, Italy for the Villa, and based on molds taken from the Roman originals, these modern bronzes are an important link to the past. 

These outdoor sculptures are exposed to the elements (salt air! birds!) and accumulate debris on their surfaces. Over time, these materials would cause corrosion and deterioration. To maintain the sculptures in good condition, conservators at the Villa routinely clean them with water, soap, and soft-bristled brushes. The sculptures are then dried with soft cloths, and wax is applied as a gentle protective layer.
