Welcome to the realm of Flora. This painting illustrates the mythological origins of various flowers.

The characters featured here appear in Ovid's Metamorphoses, a mythological poem about love and transformation written in the first century. And in each of the stories is a person who, in death, is transformed into a flower.

In the center, Flora, the Roman goddess of springtime, dances wearing a green dress while sprinkling petals amidst a garden.

The man on the left standing with contortion wearing a helmet is the warrior Ajax, who died by falling on a sword. Do you see the carnation bursting into bloom on the ground below him?

Beside and behind him is Clytie. She loves the sun god Apollo, who rides the skies above in his chariot. Because Clytie is constantly looking up at the sun, she will perish and become a sunflower. Notice the basket of sunflowers next to her.

The other figures include Hyacinth, Narcissus, and Crocus, whose associated blooms are named after them.

This painting is on view in the Getty Center exhibition "Poussin and the Dance" through May 8, 2022.
