## Caption

Have you been to the Mogao Grottoes? This is one of the world's most significant sites of Buddhist art, located on the ancient Silk Road near the town of Dunhuang, China.
 
Founded in the late 4th century by Buddhist monks as a monastery, the site eventually included as many as 1,000 cave temples cut into a mile-long rock cliff and filled with vibrant murals, sculptures, and manuscripts.
 
When trading on the Silk Road decreased, the site was all but abandoned for 400 years. Only 492 decorated cave temples remain, and many of their paintings have suffered deterioration.
 
Getty collaborated with Chinese partners for more than 25 years on conservation projects ranging from controlling sand that blows from dunes above the cliff face, to treatments for wall paintings, to managing tourism. A model project at Cave 85 developed conservation practices adaptable to other cave temples at Mogao and similar Silk Road sites.
