Get to know the work of David Hartt.

Using archival research, the artist makes photographs, digital films, installations, and sculptures that explore the role of large institutions in shaping social, cultural, and economic norms.

For the project "Stray Light," he photographed the headquarters of Johnson Publishing Company, home of "Ebony" and "Jet" magazines, following the building's sale in 2010. Here is one of the photographs.

The decor had remained largely unchanged since the early 1970s. The photographs in this project reflect an era when the company’s print publications helped define the social and cultural lives of many African Americans across the United States.
