Happy birthday, Paul Cézanne!

Still life was a subject Cézanne returned to throughout his career. By arranging and rearranging everyday objects such as fruit, pots, and cloth, he created many variations in composition and played with the complex relationship between form and color. Swipe for examples!

Through controlled brushwork in both his painting and watercolor, he focused on building up structure and solidity rather than perspective. It's no wonder that artists like Picasso and Matisse admired his work.
