And the moral of the story is...

Artist Jean-Baptiste Oudry was a tapestry designer by day, and in his spare time over the course of 5 years created 276 drawings to illustrate "Fables," a popular collection of satires written in the 1600s by Jean de La Fontaine.

This one shows a group of animals gathering to discuss a plague sweeping the land. They worry that nature is punishing them for their sins, and agree that the guiltiest among them should be sacrificed.

Each animal takes its turn admitting their vice. But when the innocent but lowly donkey makes a weak case, the more powerful beasts turn on him—you can see this moment in the illustration above, swipe for details.

Moral of the story? Social standing often determines legal judgment.
