Gross? More like Grotesque. 

In art, "Grotesque" has an unexpected definition. 

Grotesques were a fantastic genre of decorative arts most commonly seen in the 16th and 17th centuries. They explored a combination of animal, plant, and human forms. Originally, these were all elements found in ancient Roman grottoes, which is where we get the word. Through time the term became over-exaggerated and developed a negative connotation.

Here we see one of six tapestries woven by the Beauvais Manufactory titled The Grotesque Series. The set was so popular it was reproduced for wealthy patrons for over 40 years.
