A new show opens this week celebrating a Fluxus art collection—but what IS Fluxus?

In short, Fluxus means change. 

Fluxus was an international movement from the 1960s and 1970s that was critical of art itself. Though Fluxus's visual forms vary, it's the conceptual successor to Dada and Surrealism. Fluxus wanted to make people think. 

"An Anthology of Chance Operations" predates Fluxus, but it expresses the movement's big ideas: "concept art, anti-art, meaningless work, natural disasters, indeterminacy, improvisation, plans of action, stories, diagrams, music, poetry, essays, dance constructions, mathematics, [and] compositions."

The Fluxus movement birthed famous artists such as Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, and Benjamin Patterson.

The work of all of these artists is on view in our new exhibition "Fluxus Means Change: Jean Brown's Avant-Garde Archive," open now through January 2, 2022.
