This is the Gropius House, located in Lincoln, Massachusetts. When Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius moved to the United States, he built this family home.

The house is modest in scale, but revolutionary in impact. It embodies the Bauhaus design principles of simplicity, economy, and restrained beauty.

What makes this building modern?
✔️ combination of traditional elements of New England architecture—wood, brick, firestone—with innovative materials rarely used in domestic homes at the time, like glass block, acoustic plaster, and chrome

This building received a grant through the Getty Foundation in 2015 as part of Getty's "Keeping It Modern" initiative. We help fund conservation efforts of modern architecture around the world.
