Happy birthday Andy Warhol!

Marie Cosindas made this photograph of Andy Warhol at the Factory in 1966 for her series “The Dandies”, which featured a handful of stylish men such as the writer Tom Wolfe and the painter Richard Merkin.

She was celebrated for her lush, meticulously composed portraits and still-lifes, both of which she created with the newly invented Polaroid color film. As soon as Cosindas spied the orange-red fire door, she moved a pile of junk blocking the way and pushed Warhol out on the ledge so she could capture him in soft, natural light.

Warhol made hundreds of instant celebrity portraits using a Polaroid camera; his subjects typically posed against a blank wall. He was fascinated by the transitory nature of celebrity in consumer culture, prophesizing, "In the future, everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes."

Warhol maintained his place in the spotlight without ever revealing himself; he insisted that neither his hand nor persona was evident in his artwork. In this portrait, he wears dark sunglasses, which partially conceal his face.
