This month #ConnectingCollections is looking at dress in the ancient world.⁠⁠

On display in the Getty Villa’s current exhibition "Mesopotamia: Civilization Begins," these three alabaster statuettes show Mesopotamian women from the third millennium BC. They are all wearing a distinctive type of woolen robe called a kaunakes, characterized by rows of tufts or fringes.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Some of the women have loose hairstyles held by a headband; the first figure has an elaborate headdress. Their garments sometimes come up to the neck and sometimes are asymmetrical—look at the third figure, whose right shoulder is exposed.⁠⁠

Statuettes like these represent praying women or priestesses, and were probably given as temple dedications in the region of Sumer. We can tell these are women of high status by the variety and richness of their clothing and hairstyles. ⁠⁠
