This month's #ConnectingCollections is about ancient glass.⁠⁠

Glassmaking was first invented in Mesopotamia in the third millennium BC. It was not until the invention of glassblowing in the 1st century BC–1st century AD that glass become affordable and widely available throughout the Mediterranean.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Ennion is the most prominent artist among the small number of ancient glassmakers whose names are known to us. Active in the mid-first century AD, Ennion was a pioneer of high-quality mold-blown glass.⁠⁠

He specialized in the production of fine tableware with intricate patterning. Some of his vessels bear his signature, including examples in metgreekandroman and yaleartgallery. Other vessels can be associated with Ennion’s workshop because of their designs. ⁠⁠

By blowing glass into a carved mold, a glassmaker could produce multiple, identical vessels. That’s the case for two cups in the Getty collections, whose designs indicate they may have been made by Ennion. The Greek inscription on each reads “Rejoice on this which is before you,” encouraging the drinker to enjoy the contents of his cup.⁠⁠

Ennion likely hailed from Sidon in present-day Lebanon, but many of his vessels have been found in northern Italy. The precise location of his workshop remains unknown.⁠⁠
