What places in Los Angeles represent African American history, identity, and empowerment?

Historic preservation can be a powerful force in addressing social justice by empowering local communities to effect positive change.

Launched today, a new project in partnerships with Planning4LA aims to identify, protect, and celebrate African American heritage within the city. The Los Angeles African American Historic Places Project will work with local communities and cultural institutions to more fully recognize and understand African American experiences in Los Angeles over the next three years.

1. St. Elmo Village, an artists' enclave set in a compound of ten small Craftsman bungalows.
2. The Mafundi Building, founded in the wake of the 1965 Watts rebellion as an arts education center.
3. The Wilfandel Club House, purchased in 1948 by the Wilfandel Club, an African American women's organization dedicated to civic betterment, philanthropy, and culture.
4. The Lincoln Theatre, opened in 1927 as the largest of five theaters located along the Central Avenue corridor, then the heart of the city's Black community.
5. Fire Station no. 30, before the Los Angeles Fire Department integrated its workforce, all Black firefighters were assigned to this station house on Central Avenue.
6. Calvary Baptist Church, established in 1955 in Pacoima, one of the few areas of the San Fernando Valley where African Americans were allowed to live then. This church was influential in the fight for civil rights and fair housing.
