This is the George Nakashima House and Studio, a collection of 21 highly experimental buildings by Japanese-American woodworker and designer George Nakashima.

Located in the Pennsylvania countryside, the building in these photos is the Arts Building. The cantilevered stairs lead to a mezzanine floor, all within an open interior design.

Nakashima carefully inspected his materials and preferred to work with slabs of wood that sometimes contained imperfections. While most woodworkers would want to avoid flaws in the wood, Nakashima cherished them and used them for their visual quality and as a reminder that nothing is ever perfect.

What makes this building modern?
✔️ the artist's unique point of view on living and working that informed the design
✔️ the roof construction; it's a laminate hyperbolic paraboloid (say that 5x fast!), strong yet lightweight
✔️ open interior with expansive glass walls and wood surfaces

This building received a grant through the Getty Foundation in 2015 as part of Getty's "Keeping It Modern" initiative. We help fund conservation efforts of modern architecture around the world.
