This is a map of the world from the Middle Ages.

There were different types of world maps back then, and this one shows the world divided into climatic zones. The middle stripe is the area too hot for habitation, colored red, while the two stripes that flank it are considered the temperate or habitable zones of the earth.

On the left is the northern hemisphere with a label reading "rhiphei montes" or “Rhipaean mountains” in Latin. On the right is the southern hemisphere with a label reading "frigida australis" or “lifeless south” in Latin.
