When the worlds of art and science collide, unique projects emerge.

Fueled by Getty grants, 45 organizations in Southern California are currently researching some of the challenges of the 21st century. These complex challenges demand creative solutions.

Pictured here:
1️⃣Artist Lia Halloran's work traces the overlooked contributions of women in astronomy since antiquity. This work references the contributions of Willamina Patton Stevens Fleming, credited with discovering the Horsehead Nebula in 1888.
2️⃣ Cochineal insect-dyed yarns. Textile artist Porfirio Gutierrez uses Zapotec techniques and materials in his work. Knowledge about which plants to use for various dyes, and the techniques required to hand-weave his textiles were passed down through generations.
3️⃣Art can help scientists communicate their research findings. In this sculpture by Deborah Stratman and Steve Badgett, two "listening horns" are inspired by pre-radar sound surveillance technology developed to detect incoming enemy aircraft, observers can use them to track moving objects on land and in the sky. Experiences with artworks like this can help people come away with a heightened sense of curiosity in the physical landscape.
