## Caption

This is the House of the Bicentenary in Herculaneum. It's one of the grandest private houses in Herculaneum, with beautiful wall paintings and mosaics still surviving.

When Mount Vesuvius erupted in the year 79, the Roman seaside towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum and their surrounding area were engulfed by volcanic material. Herculaneum was buried more than 50 feet deep, remaining undisturbed for over 1,000 years until it was unearthed in 1709.

This home features a series of rooms arranged around a central atrium. Since 2011, Getty has worked in collaboration with ercolanoscavi and the Herculaneum Conservation Project to study and conserve the wall paintings and mosaic floor in the tablinum, the formal reception room.
