There’s an extra limb in this tapestry. Can you spot the floating hand at the left edge?

This tapestry is a little over 12 feet wide, but it used to be larger (and contained a full figure attached to the floating hand). But part of the scene was sacrificed to make the tapestry more narrow.

Tapestries took years to make and cost a lot of money. It seems odd to us that someone would alter a work of art like this, but it happened frequently.

When a tapestry passed to new owners, it was common to either trim down or add more to fit the new wall. The border would then be adjusted and re-attached. You can see the seam where the border doesn’t quite line up.
