Cézanne included apples in many of his still lifes. He was interested in capturing the solidity and volume of objects, and painting apples over and over let him thoroughly explore this small spherical shape.

On the practical side, apples last a long time! For a relatively slow, methodical painter like Cézanne, they were an ideal still-life subject that wouldn’t go bad.
